This is the first year the current 3/4 team has had a blog to keep parents informed about classroom happenings. We would love to hear what you think about the blog. Our goal is to make it the best it can be. Please fill out the short survey and provide feedback on your experience. Thanks!

The fish have arrived! Our goldfish is named Ponyo. Ms. G got the name from a movie, and we learned it means "chubby" in Japanese.
Our two tetra fish are anonymous (for now). Our share question for the week is: What should we name our two little fish? We will put it to a vote and decide as a class on what we should call the little guys or girls. On Monday our students will engage in the SBAC testing. It is a computerized assessment that helps the school gauge the efficacy of its academic programs. Below are some tips and the schedule:
We of course want students to do their best, but also have some tips for kids to hopefully relieve some stress: 1. As a class, we've looked at practice materials so there is familiarity with the format and style of questions. 2. The test is not timed. Students can take the time they need to complete the task. 3. Testing will be half a day. The other half of the day will be spent on PBL activities. 4. Kids get gum/peppermints during testing! It is a calming flavor that helps with concentration. TESTING SCHEDULE ELA (English Language Arts) Monday March 21st: 12:30-2:30 PM Thursday March 24th 8:30-10:00 AM Friday March 25th 12:30-2:30 PM Math Monday April 4th 12:30-2:30 PM Wednesday April 6th 12:30-2:30 PM Friday April 8th 12:30-2:30 PM * There will be make-up opportunities for students who may be absent during testing days* Our schedule lists this Wednesday as a Winter Wellness Day. The weather looks like it will be safe for us to go outside (although it may be a little warm).
The Craftsbury group will go on a different outdoor excursion, like a walk or hike. We'll let you know as soon as we set a schedule. All students will be updated as soon as we get more information. For now, please recognize that your student will probably need to bring materials to be outside for the day (i.e. layers of clothes, water bottles, bagged lunch, etc). Thank you! Claire and Sarah typed report card comments and sent them via email. Then there was an email issue during the day on Thursday. Our understanding is that a comment section will be available for report cards in the future.
We are under the impression that when the email problem was fixed, our report card comments were sent out. Please let us know if you did not receive teacher comments. Thanks! HAPPY NEW YEAR! We have had a marvelous week back to school. Our students have been working diligently on math facts, reading comprehension, and finishing our opinion papers.
Two things we wanted to relay to families: 1. Tomorrow (Friday January 7th, 2016) will be an early release day. Students will be released from school at 12: 50 PM. A phone and email message was sent home, but please contact us if you would like more information or did not receive the message. On Friday students will come to the music classroom. The 3/4 rooms will be influenced by the heating work, so we have been moved over to the neighboring building. 2. Scholastic book orders catalogs were passed out yesterday. Book orders are due Friday January 22, 2016 The 3/4 teachers would like to wish our students and their families well on this holiday break. Here's what we have been up to these past two days:
We spent Monday hanging out with the 5th/6th grade class. Students spent the afternoon making ornaments, candle holders, playing board games, and making snow. Here's the recipe if you want to try making snow at home: http://www.encorekidsparties.com.au/party-ideas/decorations/how-make-fake-snow Today we have been enjoying a winter-themed day. Our activities have included references to snowballs, snowmen, and snowflakes. The students have been using all of their math, writing, and reading skills in anticipation of their vacation. It has been a wonderful way to share our last day together of 2015 :) Our Native American PBL was a hit! Before we delve into our next project in the spring, we are taking some time to work on individual goals. We are calling this time "Reach for the Stars." During the PBL block, we will be working on our goals.
Students are working in small groups on either spelling, reading, writing, or math goals. We are looking forward to including technology as one way to facilitate our learning. We know our 3/4 "superstars" can do it! On Tuesday December 22nd, 2015 Ms. Daye’s homeroom will be going with 1/ 2 to the Cabot Senior Center with our Music Teacher, Leah, to go caroling. This will be during their regular music class (1:20-2:05 PM). The students will be walking to the Senior Center. At parent teacher conference time you were given the school year long permission slip for any walking field trip within our Cabot Community. If you would like your child to opt out of this field trip please let me know either by email or phone.
[email protected] 563-2289 ext. 216 Thank you, Sarah Daye The 3/4 class has completed their PBL Native American skits. They worked very hard to adapt folktales and make sure everyone in their group was included.
We sent students home with a copy of their scripts. As unofficial "homework," we are asking students to take some time to review their lines. Our goal is to have all students memorize their lines by performance time. Remember our presentation is set for Tuesday November 24th from 9-10:30 AM. We hope to see you there! |
